WHAT IS THE GERVOIS HOTEL RATING SYSTEM?

The Gervois Rating system is a new hotel rating system created by Pierre Gervois, a NYC based media entrepreneur, Founder and Publisher of the STC magazine, the iconic travel & lifestyle magazine about the United States. Pierre Gervois has an extensive experience in luxury hotels and has reviewed countless properties all around the world for the last twenty years.

Each property is rated based on its own merits, regardless of its association to a hotel chain, an affiliation program, other rating systems, or online reviews. We start reviewing a hotel without any preconception about the hotel.

We currently only rate properties in the United States.

 

WHY IS THE GERVOIS HOTEL RATING SYSTEM INDEPENDENT AND UNBIASED?

It’s simple: We do not receive any commissions on hotel bookings. We do not sell travel packages. We are not affiliated with any travel agency or hotel booking company. We do not accept advertising from hotels or hotel chains.

We are on the discerning traveler’s side.

 

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Gervois Hotel Rating rates hotels according to five essential criteria: Location, Building, Atmosphere, Dining and Service, each rated on a 20 point scale. We then add the points to create a rating out of one hundred points.

 

HOW WE RATE THE LOCATION

A perfect hotel location is in the heart of the city, within walking distance to places of major interest, close to the business district, fine dining restaurants, museums, theaters and luxury shopping. All taxi drivers know the address of the hotel. For resorts, a perfect location is in an unspoiled natural environment with breathtaking views on the nature without any other buildings obstructing the view.

 

HOW WE RATE THE BUILDING

We love historic buildings with great architectural interest and perfectly restored architectural details. We value buildings which are truly part of the city with a story to tell to the guests.

We take into consideration the political & artistic events who happened at this hotel. Did politicians, artists, and influencers used to stay at this hotel? Does the building has a commanding presence from the street?

For modern buildings, does it use sustainable technologies and recyclable materials? Is it carbon neutral? How does it dialogue with its urban environment or the natural surroundings? How are the amenities (swimming pool, spa, rooftop terrace…)

 

HOW WE RATE THE ATMOSPHERE

We define the atmosphere as all the combined elements that make you feel well in the property: Sophisticated interior decoration, authentic vintage furniture (or designer contemporary furniture) in the lobby, original art pieces, original flooring and ceilings. We love fresh floral compositions changed everyday. We appreciate an intimate ambiance and the feeling of being received as friends in a private mansion. We like intuitive, simple and easy to use technology in the rooms.

Complimentary high speed wifi should be available in all areas. And, of course, absolute cleanliness everywhere.

 

HOW WE RATE THE DINING

The quality of the food and beverages should be consistent across all areas of the hotel: breakfast buffet, all restaurants, bars, in-room dining or pool bar.

Absolute freshness of seasonal ingredients is critical. We are expecting a modern take on classics, with a subtle sophistication in the plating. The wine & spirits list should show a deep understanding of pairing with the restaurants’s specialties. We are sensitive to elegant chinaware, glassware and silverware. We are particularly sensitive to a cigar bar with a large selection of imported, hand rolled, premium cigars stored at the right temperature and perfectly humidified.

All rooms should have premium coffee machines and premium tea bags as well as a good selection of spirits.

 

HOW WE RATE THE SERVICE

We love a warm welcome without arrogance. A good service should be discreet, friendly and professional at the same time. Guests should be greeted when entering and leaving the building, and if possible by their names. We appreciate to see diversity in the staff.

We condemn discriminations as well as micro aggressions against guests based on their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, or simply on the guests’ perceived social status.

 

THE GERVOIS HOTEL RATING SYSTEM

96 – 100 Hotel of international historic importance in a perfect location with the utmost level of sophistication in interior decoration & atmosphere, world-class fine dining options and flawless service.

90 – 95 One of the finest hotels in the World in a remarkable location with sophisticated interior decoration, fine dining options and excellent service.

86 – 89 A highly recommended hotel with an enjoyable luxury feeling, offering a premium customer experience. One of the very best hotels in its city.

80 – 85 A recommended hotel that will deliver a great overall customer experience, but that can have one minor, easily correctible, deficiency on one of the rated sections

70 – 79 A recommended quality hotel with a good overall customer experience, but that needs substantial improvement in one or two of the rated sections.

Below 70: Hotels rated below 70 Gervois points are not included in the Gervois Hotel Rating.

All Gervois rated hotels are recommended. We do not rate hotels that we would not recommend.

Non rated hotels can request inspections & pre-ratings observations that will not be published, to help them to improve their customer experience and reach excellence.
